Our Christian journey of faith includes many times of learning and growth, but also includes opportunities for us to teach and lead others in their walk of faith. The Square is a visual reminder of the four stages of learning from the perspective of both the leader and the learner, helping us to be better disciples and, in turn, equipping us to fulfill Jesus’ call for us to make disciples.
Stage one of the Square is characterized by a directive style of leadership and an eager enthusiasm on the part of the learner (“I do, you watch”). Stage two moves into a coaching style of leadership as the learner discovers that things may not be as easy or simple as first thought (“I do, you help”). Stage three is a time of teaming and friendship as the leader and learner work closely together (“You do, I help”). Stage four develops the delegating style of leadership as the learner becomes confident in their skills and knowledge (“You do, I watch”).
